SUMMARY:Vee Jay King and his Dukes
DESCRIPTION:Vee Jay King and his Dukes serve up a glorious mix of West Coast Rhythm and Blues and the Swamp Blues of Louisiana. If you like the music of T Bone Walker\, Gatemouth Brown\, Slim Harpo\, Lazy Lester etc.\, you’ll love this Band of top Midlands based musicians.  They capture the groove and feel of the original music and add their own twist to create a vibe that will have you itching to dance\, just as the audiences did back in the day. \nDuring the evening the band will be offering free introductory dance lessons for beginners\, to help you move in time with the beat. \nVee Jay King and his Dukes are: \nJohn Roy Potter – Guitar and Vocals. \nJohn has played either guitar or bass in a wide variety of styles since the 1970s\, pausing only to sleep and drink. He has played all across the UK\, Ireland and Europe with bands as diverse as Special Clinic (Folk Rock)\, The Wide Boys (Reggae/Ska)\, The Toy Hearts (Bluegrass and Western Swing)\, King Pleasure and the Biscuit Boys (Jump Blues and Swing)\, and more recently\, Ricky Cool and The In Crowd (60s R&B and Bluebeat/Ska)\, and Steve ‘Big Man’ Clayton (Boogie-Woogie). He has a tendency to dribble. \nRicky Cool – Vocals\, Harmonica and Saxophone. \nRicky Cool first burst onto the scene in the 1970’s\, when Ricky Cool and the Icebergs became one of the first bands in the country to play swing style rhythm and blues\, The name soon became established and Ricky’s reputation for delivering great\, danceable music in a highly entertaining\nway began. Since then he has fronted and played with a number of bands presenting authentic American music. He co-founded The Big Town Playboys\, the band that nurtured the talent of Mike Sanchez. He worked with Robert Plant in the first Honeydrippers line up. Ricky is regarded as one of the finest exponents of Blues and Country style harmonica in the UK and as such he still occasionally works with Mike Sanchez and also with UK blues star Big Boy Bloater. He has played on recordings by Hank Wangford\, Matchbox\, Mike Sanchez and even toured with Billy Connolly as can be seen on the ‘Billy Connolly Bites Your Bum’ DVD. \nChris Lomas – Bass and Vocals. \nIn a 50+ year career Chris’s journey has taken him from Nechells to Nashville via Nuremberg to Northampton. Chris has also had success as a songwriter and producer\, both in the US and the UK\, but not enough to be able to retire\,\nso. \nHoward Smith – Drums and Vocals. \nHoward has been a stalwart of the Midlands’ music scene for the last forty years. His drumming is not flashy\, he’s dependable\, a solid sender. He establishes the groove and he keeps it. He’s adept in all the main musical genres: Blues\, R&B\, Country and Jazz and is the drummer to call if you want a groove that swings. Howard has toured extensively throughout Europe from Cork in the West to Corfu in the East\, Murmansk in The North to Cadiz in the South. He’s held a long residency on live TV\, performed on Radio and completed too many recording sessions to itemise. Howard sat on the drummer’s stool in the Steve Gibbons Band for 20 years and plays Motown with Midnight City. SUMMARY:Three Men in a Boat
DESCRIPTION:From Giles Shenton Productions and Stratford Theatre Company comes Three men in a Boat. \nDirected by Simon Downing \nAdapted from the splendid book by Jerome K Jerome by Simon Downing & Giles Shenton \nWith Giles Shenton (Old Herbaceous & My Dog’s Got No Nose) as Jerome \n \nJoin Jerome as he recounts the hilarious story of his boating holiday along the magnificent River Thames with his two companions and Montmorency the dog. Come and join in the fun as Giles Shenton expertly takes the helm and pilots you through the ridiculous tale of men behaving badly while messing about in boats! \n“George got out his banjo after supper\, and wanted to play it\, but Harris objected: he said he had got a headache and did not feel strong enough to stand it. George thought the music might do him good—said music often soothed the nerves and took away a headache; and he twanged two or three notes\, just to show Harris what it was like.  \nHarris said he would rather have the headache.”  \n“There are a few seriously funny books that remain great for all time. Three Men in a Boat is one of these” The Guardian \n“Timeless appeal” The Independent \n“Pitch-perfect comedy about\, well\, three men in a boat” The Telegraph \n“Skilfully distilled from Jerome K. Jerome’s comic masterpiece into 95 minutes of pure delight. To those who wondered if the same team could live up to the earlier success of Old Herbaceous\, the answer was an emphatic yes. A master class in confidence\, stagecraft and delivery.” Opening Night Review \n“The nearest thing to “audio slapstick” I’ve ever heard\, culminating in the sublime comedy of opening a tin\, when you’ve forgotten the tin opener. It is not often that you come out of a theatrical performance feeling like you’ve been sharing happy and hilarious times\, safe from a cruel world & wrapped in a warm blanket.” Vera Fletcher Review \nGiles Shenton “creates an instant rapport with the audience\, drawing us into his world and making the characters in it so real we feel you have known them forever. ” Edinburgh Fringe Review

SUMMARY:Gren Bartley
DESCRIPTION:Gren Bartley is a UK-based composer and songwriter creating emotionally resonant\, story-driven music. With a background in folk and world music\, Gren blends organic instrumentation with cinematic textures to craft distinctive\, versatile soundscapes that enhance narrative and atmosphere. \n \nHaving composed for award-winning theatre productions\, BBC radio and television\, and self-released albums\, Gren brings a deep understanding of how music connects with character\, setting\, and emotion. His work spans genres — from delicate acoustic themes and atmospheric underscore to rhythmically driven pieces ideal for trailers or advertising. \n  \n \n  \n2024 saw the long awaited new album from Gren Bartley. Two years in the making\, “Unfold” expands further and deeper into the cinematic folk genre. Somewhere between R.E.M.s Automatic for the People and Nick Drake’s Five Leaves Left\, Bartley has found something entirely of it’s own mind. \n  \nHis 2015 album ‘Magnificent Creatures’ (***** R2 magazine) was given outstanding reviews. With production by Birmingham based Gavin Monaghan (Robert Plant\, Ryan Adams\, Nizlopi\, Ocean Colour Scene etc…)\, the record built on the “constantly outstanding” (fRoots) quality of his previous two records. The album took Gren and his music around the world performing at festivals and venues. \n  \n \nIn 2019 Gren turned to a more stripped back sound of solo performance and wrote and arranged a new album of tunes and songs exploring his love of world music and bottleneck slide guitar. Gren released the new album “Quiet” (***** Northern Sky magazine) to excellent reviews. \n  \n  \nGren Bartley is part of the future of melodic songwriting. Forever evolving and adapting\, and with unmatched guitar work\, he is a modern day troubadour\, using his influences from older folk and world music traditions\, to create truly astounding records. He brings something new and unique to his audience. He is an artist not to be missed. \n  \n★★★★★ – BCR Radio\n★★★★★ – Northern Sky \n★★★★★ – R2 Magazine \n★★★★★ – Northern Monkey \n  \n“He’s invented his own kind of music… and everything about it is class” – BBC Radio \n“Constantly outstanding songwriting” – fRoots \n“Astounding” – KLOF Magazine \n“This chap has a gift” – Living Tradition Magazine \n \n“Will be heard more often once people realise just how good he is” – Northern Sky \n  \nAdmittance: £12.00 (Advanced) – £14.00 (On the door) \n  \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Paul Cowley
DESCRIPTION:Singer-songwriter Paul Cowley crafts heartfelt country blues from his Brittany barn\, blending classic influences and modern storytelling. \nThe Mississippi River doesn’t run past Paul Cowley’s granite barn in the rolling French countryside but his acoustic country blues flow deeply there just the same. \nWhen Paul says his love of one of the most basic and beautiful of all blues styles grew out of his life in Birmingham\, he’s talking England\, not Alabama. \nThe blues came late. In his early 40s\, with his jazz-guitarist uncle’s steel-string guitar\, inspired by Lightnin’ Hopkins’ Coffee House Blues album. “It was like flipping a switch\,” he says\, on hearing Hopkins’ music\, and the hard-wiring that had been part of his early trade as a builder now carried the musical currents of the Delta. \nThe fact that Paul had never been to Mississippi\, Chicago\, or any of the traditional sources of this unique music\, didn’t matter. The blues came calling. \nInitially\, Paul took that guitar\, some short-lived guitar lessons from his teenage years\, plugged in his new blues influences\, and became his own country bluesman — a singer\, songwriter and storyteller with a flair for turning the long and winding road of his life into carefully crafted musical adventures. \n“It was a revelation to me and the beginning of an enduring passion for acoustic blues and particularly country blues\,” Paul says. “I like songwriters and storytellers rather than flash technical players.” That puts some of the giants of country blues in the past century among his influences: Players like Hopkins\, Rev. Robert Wilkins\, Fred McDowell\, Mississippi John Hurt\, Blind Willie McTell\, and others. \nPhotos of Paul Cowley taken by Karen Cooper\nIn Birmingham\, Paul sharpened his musical skills\, and was instrumental in forming the The Sutton Blues Collective. The club booked acoustic blues performers such as Guy Davis\, Doug MacLeod\, Steve James\, Del Ray\, Mary Flower\, Watermelon Slim and many more over a ten year period. \nThe blues highway beckoned\, and after about ten years of music in Birmingham\, Paul carried his century-old American country blues from England to another country\, moving to southern Brittany\, in France. \nOf course\, the country he picked is part of his story. He left Birmingham for a rural setting in Brittany\, where he records in his granite barn – acoustic and country in the same space. \n“It has a great natural sound perfect for the low production value approach that I like.” It’s where he has recorded his last four albums and provides a home base for his travels in France\, England & Belgium. “I tour all year round all over France and generally do two tours a year in the UK. It is a constant adventure and voyage of discovery.” \nHe’s been busy creating his music in that “natural” studio. His last two albums – Just What I Know and Long Time Comin’ – made “albums of the year” on Gary Burnett’s highly knowledgeable and readable blog\, Down at the Crossroads. And Just What I Know from 2018 made Burnett’s “20 Best Acoustic Blues Albums” of the decade from 2010 to 2019\, taking its place among some of the best. There’s a new album in the works. \nThe title song from Paul’s most recent album\, Long Time Comin’\, celebrates both a conclusion and a beginning. It “references my musical journey that started more than two decades ago\,” he says. “When I started tentatively all those years ago\, I had no idea of the path I had embarked upon. It’s a wonderful adventure\, hopefully one that will continue for years to come. \nOne line from that song succinctly sums up Paul Cowley’s continuing musical journey: “I got my mojo\, I found my voice\, I’m singin’ the blues\, It’s the natural choice…!” \nBio by Jim White (Florida)\, The Blues Roadhouse Blog \n  \nVideo\nPaul Cowley YouTube Channel \nhttps://bromsgrovearts.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Paul-Cowley-One-Way-Ticket-Live.mp4\nQuotes\nJim White-Roadhouse Blues: \nCowley’s music lives in the fertile borderlands connecting genres! \nIn a world obsessed with flash and immediacy\, Paul Cowley has cast his perceptive “Long Shadow” on a record that values patience\, craft and honesty. It’s the exquisite work of an artist completely at ease with himself and his musical vision! \nPaul Cowley’s richly imagined and thoughtfully executed music is a pleasure on multiple levels. \nGary Burnett-Down At The Crossroads: \nTimeless\, classic – sounding bluesy songs that will have broad appeal. \nSeurus Og-At The Barrier: \nA troubadour\, happy in his own scuffed boots. \nAdmittance: £8.00 (Advanced) – £10.00 (On the door)
